DISC SIX : DEEP PURPLE Mk3 & Mk4

[1] Stormbringer R C
1974
Stormbringer, Quad Mix. Mk 3's final album and another powerful opener designed to work well on-stage. From the October 1974 American Quadrophonic mix done by Gary Ladinsky at the Record Plant (LA), first time on CD.

[2] Soldier Of Fortune R C
1974
Stormbringer, Quad Mix. Blackmore wasn't able to push the album where he wanted but when he did this slow moody piece contrasted with the funk elsewhere. Again from the 1974 American Quadrophonic mix, first time on CD.

[3] Hold On R C
1974
Stormbringer, Quad Mix. I mentioned my favourites earlier, here's another. Blackmore dismissed the song and rattled off an effortless solo that still astonishes me. From the 1974 American Quadrophonic mix, first time on CD.

[4] Highball Shooter (instrumental) U
1974
Stormbringer. This early instrumental version was done in Germany with all the guitar in place. When the vocals were added later in America the guitar work was almost erased. Previously unissued. Mix by Guy Massey at Abbey Road, April 2002.

[5] The Gypsy (live)
April 7th 1975
Paris Palais des Sports. One of the few Stormbringer tracks to be done live, captured here on Mk 3's final tour, and Blackmore's last show with the band. From Mk 3 Final Concerts CD.

[6] Drifter (live rehearsal)
June 1975
Californial. Mk 4 began writing almost as soon as Bolin arrived. This early rehearsal take of a Come Taste The Band track is close to the final version they would record four months later. From the Days May Come CD.

[7] Dance To The Rock'n'Roll (live jam)
June 1975
California. Mk 4 spent days just jamming with Bolin, and everyone was very excited by the way it was shaping up. This rare surviving extract from one of those jams shows why they were all so fired up by the new band. From the Days May Come CD.

[8] This Time Around / Owed To 'G' R
1975
Come Taste The Band. An imaginative sequence from the new album which ranged from gentle piano work to bone-crunching rock riffs. Remastered from the original 1975 tapes.

[9] Love Child R
1975
Come Taste The Band. In places (as here) this final album stripped back the band to their bare rock roots with powerful results. Remastered from the original 1975 tapes.

[10] Wild Dogs (live)
December 15th 1975
Tokyo Budo-kan. Bolin recorded this on his solo album Teaser and it was added to some of Purple's shows, including this excellent rendition from Japan. From the Live In Tokyo 2CD.

[11] Lady Luck (live)
February 27th 1976
Longbeach Arena. Mk 4's shows were up and down, but when it worked it worked, as this powerful version of a Come Taste track shows. From the Live In California '76 2CD.

[12] Getting Tighter (live)
February 27th 1976
Longbeach Arena. Glenn Hughes was able to take on more vocals with Mk 4, and drives this extended live version of an album track with confidence. From the Live In California '76 2CD.

[13] You Keep On Moving R
1975
Come Taste The Band. All the hard work to arrange this set chronologically... but it seemed fitting to end on a Mk 4 studio track which even fans of the other line-ups admit is one of their very best. Remastered from the original 1975 tapes - and sounding wonderful for it.
