"Kerry and I made the three hour drive from Port Stephens to see Glenn Hughes perform at the Basement in Sydney on Saturday. We arrived to find the doors still shut and the poster on the wall informing us that a string quartet would be helping out! The set was electric / acoustic. Glenn and Marsh on acoustic guitars (amped), Roth on keyboards, and the string quartet. They started with Coast to Coast and.... man, can he sing! This Time Around, Whiter Shade Of Pale, and Soul Mover were all great. I didn't note the set list, and was too slow to swipe the cellist's list! Nights In White Satin was stunning - listen to the version on Soul Mover (I bought it at the gig to get autographed and discovered it on the cd) - my God it's awesome. Mistreated was incredible and Marsh was pulling out the Blackmore-isms (close eyes and pretend). Glenn took up bass half way through the set "I'm going to turn it up, Jimmy!..." They closed the set with a ripper Getting Tighter with Jimmy Barnes on vocals. He came on making jokes about being able to sing. I actually like Jimmy's vocal style, he's got a very powerful voice. He handled the bulk of the song, with Glenn adding a few bits to smooth and sweeten it - sublime. Then back for an encore of You Keep on Moving. The gig was filmed, so expect a DVD sometime. Simply put, it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. PS. Did I mention the boy can sing? review: Ian Macdonald |

LIVE REVIEW Having decided to wait for more UK tour dates next year (and hopefully something closer to home) I got a phone call very late in the day telling me that I'd won 2 tickets for the Dudley show last night (in a competition I only vaguely remember entering). It seemed churlish to turn my nose up at the 300 mile round trip, so I went for it, taking my 14-year old son Luke along for his first proper gig. We were treated like royalty on arrival, allowed to sit in on the
soundcheck and chatted with Glenn before and after the show (and were
presented with a signed CD each too!). |

LIVE REVIEW Clearly this is not some 70's rock star doing a cabaret act. He was relevant, talented, powerful and modern. The set list was the same as Dudley. WOW! What an amazing and talented man. His voice has lost nothing in 30 years, amazing. As with Deep Purple shows these days, there were quite a lot of kids the audience. The crowd was quite small, but considering you can only get tickets on the net and no one knew about this gig it was a good turn out. The performance was truly breathtaking. This is a band that has hardly played together? You would think they had played together for years. The new songs stood tall against old Purple classics. After the gig I met Glenn. All I can say is - what a truly genuine human being he is. He has time for people. I travelled 20 miles to see Glenn; I would gladly travel the world next time, and I will. If you have never seen this man, go and see him, you will not be disappointed. I am a converted man. Thanks Glenn. review: Rob Walton |
