Rod Evans was born on January 19, 1947 in Slough, west of London. Rod Evans began singing in pop bands at 17 (and did a bit of fashion modelling on the side). His first band was Slough based The Horizons, who gigged n the UK and in Germany. Rod then joined another local Slough group, The Jumping Jimmy Band in 1965 and they changed their name to M I 5. M I 5 turned fully professional and in mid-1966 cut their first single before deciding to change their name to The Maze (not to be confused with the Black American band), cutting three singles and an EP between late 1966 and early 1967.
Disillusioned by their lack of real success, Rod Evans and then Ian Paice auditioned for Deep Purple in early 1968. Rod Evans left Deep Purple Mk 1 in July 1969 to record a solo single before joining American band Captain Beyond for two albums in 1972/3.
He left music except for a short stint in an ersatz Deep Purple band in 1980.
