Rjukanhuset, Rjukan, Norway, October 3th 2008
The first time I saw Glenn Hughes on stage was in July 2007, when he played his first gig with Come Taste the Band (a Norwegian cover group). The setlist was mainly Deep Purple; I was very impressed by the performance, and really enjoyed the show. Glenn’s voice sounded great, and considering it was their first gig together, they played really tightly.
When Glenn and Come Taste the Band annonced several gigs during the summer of 2008. Sadly I missed all those gigs, but an extra gig at Rjukan in October 2008 came to my rescue. The concert was called “An Evening of Deep Purple”, AND IT REALLY WAS !! The concert took place at a small venue, Rjukanhuset, and the crowd was around 200-300.
They kicked of with Stormbringer and the rest was a memorable journey through Deep Purple Mark III and IV. Glenn was in good mood, and chatted with the audience between songs. His voice was absolutely brilliant, and he did some great vocal improvisations. Glenn is also an fantastic bass player, and together with Come Taste the Band the show sounded great.
Come Taste the Band have been playing Deep Purple tribute shows since 1997, and are probably one of the best Purple cover groups in Europe. They have also been voted the best tribute band in Norway..
Setlist : Stormbringer, Might Just Take Your Life, Sail Away, Mistreated incl. Solveigs song by Grieg, Love Child, Getting Tighter incl. Dance To The Rock'n Roll, You Fool No One, You Keep On Moving. Encore :Soulmover, Burn.
This was probably one of very few chances to hear an original member of Deep Purple Mark III and IV perform a whole show from Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band. Records I love to hear, but completely left out of Deep Purple's setlist after the 1984 reunion.
Glenn and Come Taste the Band are already planning several gigs during the summer of 2009. For more information see the band's website.
