LIVE REVIEWS The venue had a capacity of maybe 500, but the response was not that big and maybe 150 people came to see that gig. At about 10.30 the lights went out and Don Airey and his band appeared on stage. As an additional surprise, as with the Spetmber 2006 show, the line-up included violin prodigy Lidia Baich. It was interesting thing to hear the likes of "Since You Been Gone" played on violin. The atmosphere was great and the band seemed to have a great time. The full line-up was Don Airey, Carl Sentance on vocals (Persian Risk, Geezer Butler Band, Krokus), Chris Childs on bass (Thunder), Doka z Kaitner on guitar, Bernhard Welz on drums and Lidia Baich on violin. If you can catch them playing live, please do. This was my fifth Don Airey and Friends gig, and each one has been unique. The set-list in Grieskirchen differed from last year. Not that they kicked any songs out, instead they added three more. One of those I hadn't heard for 15 -20 years, a great surprise. The set list was: Spotlight Kid / Rapture of the Deep / Love's No Friend / Woman from Tokyo / Weissheim / Still of the Night / Whiteout / Is this Love / Difficult to Cure / Mr Crowley / Child in Time (yes they played it and they did a good job!) / Mendelsohn ~ Somewhere Over The Rainbow / All Night Long / Lost in Hollywood Encores: Since You Been Gone / Black Night The second (unplanned) encore was Highway Star (with a bass solo as well as drum solo complete with one handed roll!) Of course it has to be borne in mind that many of the tracks were interpreted in a different way to the originals, but were no less interesting for that. It was a great setlist and the songs were performed extremely well. No complaints here! review: Rudy Neises |
