"The
death of Sir Malcolm Arnold will be a sorrow to Deep Purple
fans who have admired his collaborations with organist Jon
Lord between 1969 and 1971. Yet while you may be familiar
with the Concerto, it's also more than likely you will have
heard Arnold's work over the years without even realising
it, especially if you're a film fan, as he wrote a number
of memorable scores for titles as diverse as St. Trinians
and Bridge On the River Kwai. Arnold had been ill for many
years, and wasn't well enough to attend the restaged Concerto
in 1999, although with his partner he did attend the launch
evening for the remastered DVD at Abbey Road. Many rock
fans who find the world of Classical music at times a little
daunting and snobbish will appreciate the way Arnold spent
his entire working life merrily ignoring such attitudes,
and embracing all types of music."

"Let
me take a moment to pass on sincere sympathies on the death
of Malcolm Arnold, to his family and beyond. He took a risk
being involved in the Concerto, the world of music would
have been a much blander place without him."
