Purple & Family Time to get the Windowlene out, polish the www.deep-purple.net crystal ball once more, and take a look at what fans of the various line-ups and Purple-related outfits can look forward to during 2007. As with last year's prognostications (most of which came to pass) we'll revisit the page to keep it up to date over the next few months. Most of these titles are covered in more details in the relevant newspages but fans have said it's useful to be able to have this overview.
Deep Purple themselves have not yet announced plans to record a third album with Don Airey, but if they are trying to keep the two year gap between Bananas and Rapture, this would put them on line to record something in the summer for release towards the end of 2007. We'll keep our eyes peeled. Otherwise we hope to see a few people at one of the UK shows in April.
Deep Purple archive-wise Live In London from 1974 is now scheduled and pre-production work about finished, so this long-awaited UK tour souvenir is at last due in 2007.
Also largely ready in studio terms is Stormbringer, which will have the album, quad tracks and Glenn's excellent remixes. There is no date yet for this but you can follow progress on the site.
Purple Records / Sonic Zoom wise there are titles on the go which it is hoped to schedule, including a Scottish soundboard from 1974, Paris 1970 and Amsterdam 1969. The label have dipped a toe into the download market with tracks starting to appear on iTunes and similar providers, and a further development here is expected in the not too distant future.
On the Deep Purple Archive DVD front work is well advanced on the next archive collection and again you can follow progress on the site, with several fans having been able to help with information on old footage following appeals there.
Moving on to the associated outfits, Whitesnake have a new studio album in the can, plus a back-catalogue fest in the form of 1987 Anniversary Edition - a CD with bonus tracks plus an additional DVD of clips from 1987 onwards. The next three EMI remasters are now scheduled (six-track promos are already circulating) as well.
Blackmore fans will get the last of the three anniversary Rainbow German shows from 1976 and there's talk on some Blackmore's Night groups about a show filmed in Paris in 2006 coming out on DVD later this year. They may well want to deliver a new studio album to AFM to follow the Winter Carols release of late 2006 too.
Glenn Hughes is likely to be working on a new studio album and there is a semi-acoustic set filmed in Australia last year due out there on DVD (and perhaps CD) before very long. His UK tour is rescheduled and we look forward to seeing his new band in action.
Work on the first approved Gillan archive DVD is nearly finished and this will take in a rare UK TV set from 1981 plus bonus tracks from Top Of The Pops. His celebratory DVD career retrospective is also still on the cards and the book of his web ramblings Smoke This should also see wider distribution this year.
Jon Lord fans will be interested in his Boom Of The Tingling Strings piece, which is due out this year on CD, although he may not actually be performing on this himself. The second Hoochie Coochie Men CD is almost ready, a studio set this time, and Jon plays on most of that.
The Tommy Bolin scene looks like it'll throw up some more releases this year too, although I've again been sworn to secrecy on the rather exciting project that's due next.
Darker Than Blue 58 goes to press any day, and once that's off his desk, Simon plans to lay siege to Nigel Young's gaff and wrestle the manuscript of the Deep Purple Diary off him. There are at least two further publications in the pipeline, including a photo book, but Simon was unwilling to be drawn on that too much until it's actually ready - given the long delays to other projects of late. He's also threatening something to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Smoke On The Water, so stay tuned.
